CALGARY - TransCanada Corp. said it continues to investigate the cause of an explosion on its natural gas pipeline which lit up the sky for hours near a town in northern Ontario over the weekend.

The rupture late Saturday night on TransCanada's mainline system forced the evacuation of a number of Beardmore, On. residents but no one in the town, located about two kilometres from the blast, was injured, the company said Monday.

Residents returned to their homes by Sunday.

TransCanada staff at its Calgary-based control centre shut valves to the pipeline segment within minutes of noting a drop in pipeline pressure, said spokesman James Millar. However, gas remaining in the pipeline took about nine hours to burn off.
