The recent pictures of the Guatemala sink hole is really an amazing site - in another different category from anything I was familiar with.

Freaky but real (GIZMODO)
I became a certified scuba diver in 1977. Immediately after my graduation from University, a wetsuit and full scuba gear. I have a faint recollection that it was some surprise from my Dad and the extended family. We lived in Fort Smith NWT at the time. The countryside is littered with karst topographic features. Some of the best fishing lakes were incredibly deep, clear and clean, AND stocked with rainbows and brown trout. I dove in one of these lakes and I believe at the deepest point I experienced it was close to 70ft and probably quite a bit more. Cold water!!
