I have been involved in numerous projects similar to this one. The BC Environmental Assessment process has already approved the project. There is considerable expectation that this federal review process should also approve the project. The crux of the matter is the use of existing waterbodies for waste disposal. The mine plan calls for the creation of 'replacement' habitat. The tradeoff is economic development and activity for environmental compromise. The reports concludes that there will be significant environmental impacts, and that their mandate did not include the economic component. Since when does an environmental review not include the socio-economic component? The decision by the Federal Minister, to accept or not accept the report's recommendations is the next step.
