Industry group defends oilsands

A U.S. energy industry group came out swinging in defence of Canadian oilsands Wednesday, saying access to the controversial resource is vital for national energy security and the economy.

The American Petroleum Institute expects to launch an ad campaign in January pitching the benefits of Canadian bitumen to the United State public, countering increasingly heated opposition to the oilsands and a proposed Alberta-to-Texas pipeline project.

Canadian bitumen represents much-needed jobs for regions hit hard by the recession as well as energy security for the entire nation, with moves to block flow of the resource working against those interests, said API spokespeople.

"We want people to encourage their policy-makers to make the right decisions on Canadian oilsands and the right decisions on American jobs and energy," Cindy Schild told reporters Wednesday.
