Or will he be remembered as the perpetrator of creating a new class of citizen - a person of reduced circumstances (PoRC). I first read of this label in Alexandra Penney's Daily Beast blog. Then went looking for its origin. Didn't find anything substantive. But it gave me a thought.
Let's go for a walk down that path. A sort of assessment of the aptitude and attitude - of greedy pigs. And the relationship with their prey, the lovely truffle. Uncle Bernie's favorite truffle was denominated in billions. Ok, ok, so real truffles are a very high-end mushroom, a delicacy, very expensive, very sought after, and rather valuable. An acquired taste I believe. Truffles (and billions) are also quite hard to find whilst growing underground. But, he who finds the truffles can sell the truffles and a lucrative business is born.
Ok, so back to the truffle pig - what makes a good truffle pig? And what might their matches be in our steamy but frost-laden financial world of today. Ok, so truffle pigs are supposed to be female, but in our modern tolerant society, go with me on this one. Is Uncle Bernie a "worthy" truffle pig? Let's examine that.
Truffle hunting in America is mostly limited to Oregon and Washington, and in Europe, Italy and France. Cultivation of the spore has brought the truffle to Spain, Sweden, New Zealand, Australia and the U.K. American Frank Garland successfully cultivate the black Perigord truffle. Such propogation takes place in N.C., Virginia, Tennessee and Kentucky. Obviously, our truffle pig was not well informed, with his hunting confined primarily to New York and Florida.
To find your truffles, you could have a choice of dogs or pigs. Dogs are considered better than pigs because the pigs like to eat the truffles they find. Well, eating his own truffles - we have a pig for sure. Bernie, if you're not going to be a bull, and not going to be a bear, then as a pig, you will be slaughtered.
There are three pre-conditions that improve the likelihood of finding truffles - must be warm and the soil moist; the right trees must be present; and among the right trees, need to find the rodent dug pits in their hunt for truffles. Warm, moist soil (check), the right trees (I'll assume the palms of Palm Beach were the draw in this case) and lots of rodent dug pits, ok, so I'm thinking 'possums, and Ozzie saying, ... must move toward the light (Shatner's voice-over in the animation Over the Hedge).
A truffle pig buries his head in the dirt and goes sniffing for truffles; check -can't think of anything else Bernie did except bury his head and feast on truffles when he found them.
Its all in the nose, and no one's nose knows better than BLM at finding the rarest of truffles. The breadth and depth of seeking out truffles is unrivaled. And he kept it secret just like any good hunting ground.
Why are pigs so adept at sniffing out truffles? Well it has something to do with the large quantities of a substance also synthesized in the testes of boars. Why do humans seek truffles? Well, apparently this same compound has a psychological effect on the sexual attractiveness in human beings. Yes its been tested. So sex is involved. Isn't it always?
Truffle pigs are generally aggressive, pushy and insensitive to political nuances whilst seeking the below the ground (radar?) riches. Oh yea, that's what I'm taking about!
http://trufflepigs.com is password protected. Another exclusive club, similar to BLM.
SugarPlum Dreams retails a soft plushy animal stuffy truffle pig for $45. More fantasy than fact, Uncle Bernie fits the bill.
And last but not least; Max and The Truffle Pig: The Musical - Culinary Tale of Longing and Adventure - it's hard out here for a pig .... Max is a serious boy. Suzette is a light-hearted pig. Max’s father is the most temperamental of French chefs. When the neighborhood Countess announces her plan to come to dinner, Max and Suzette are sent deep into the French woods to find that rarest of gastronomic delicacies: the truffle. Nothing goes according to plan. Bernie's plan is so far still a mystery. Several themes have been postulated - will we ever get to know the real story?
