- The large utilities are often considered amongst the stable and relatively conservative investments. They generate decent dividends and generally have some proportion of their asset portfolio in regulated businesses. Public images are generally benign or neutral. Many are good corporate citizens who contribute significantly to community, national and global initiatives. They are generally active in their pursuit for improving their corporate social responsibility performance. But reputations are nothing in the wake of an accident, historical performance becomes an also ran in the ensuing discussions about Enbridge. The microscope is put to 1000x and every detail is put under scrutiny. BP has just had their bout and are entering what some have coined as potentially the largest litigation in corporate history. Corporate performance as a whole has had to show it's under belly in these last years of financial chaos. The general public has seen glimpse of despicable greed and excesses in some corporate and government circles. But society's response has remained mostly muted. Witness Goldman Sachs, Citi and others recent settling of affairs with the SEC. Hardly meaningful.
- BP has been a subject of press of late with mixed results. We will wait to see whether Enbridge is any more apt at managing their public image than BP has been. Complicated and complex businesses and a lot of fodder for more negative opinion. Watch and Learn.
