Truth in Advertising

I have long been a fan of good and even goofy advertising.  Radio.  Print.  Television.  And now the innovation of online and mobile applications.  Communicating a message that promotes a product.  For certain, some of the commercialism of the modern day is more than a little overwhelming for me.  But in the most part easy to ignore.

But then every now and then, a commercial comes along that is both annoying and difficult to ignore.  Why?  Because it is played during my very brief morning commute on the radio, and I would categorize it is promoting borderline half-truths if not more.

The commercial starts off with a lady leaving a message on a telephone advising her employer she won't be in .... because she's receiving a big return on her investment.  Ok, ok, this could be possible.  But the means by which you would generate sufficient return on your investment to quit your job does not really equate to buying a new furnace, and the subsequent savings in energy usage.  But wait, there's more! There is eligibility for up to $1200 rebate!  Ok, so still, all taken together, where is the opportunity to not come into work and quit your job?  Maybe I just take all this noise far too seriously! hahahaha!

While I realize that this type of advertising can and probably should be taken tongue in cheek, there are a lot of people in this world that would subconsciously accept the premise as being strong enough to compel their decisions.  Whether they achieve the claims of the advertising is almost immaterial.  They can say that it has that 'potential'.  For me, this is another example of how our modern world seems to value appearances more the substance.  Perception is everything right?  I have come to adopt 'perspective is everything'.
