WASHINGTON (MNI) - Initial claims for U.S. state unemployment benefits rose 18,000 to 409,000 in the January 1 holiday week, slightly below expectations, the U.S. Labor Department reported Thursday.
A Labor Department analyst said that seasonal factors expected unadjusted claims to rise by 4.8%, or about 25,000 claims in the January 1 week. Unadjusted claims usually hit their peak in the second week of January, according to a Labor Department analyst.
