Arizona Fire Rages On (Boston Globe and ITNNews)

My summer jobs during university included a few years with the fire fighting crews in the NWT.  A pair of Mitchell B-25s from Lamont, Alberta, and Conair Aviation DC-6s were in our fleet.  Fascinating times for a teenager coming of age with all the thrill and excitement - danger and adventure - a time of fabulous stories.  But our fires generally had little to no human element.  The intensity and ferociousnessof these fires like Slave Lake, Wood Buffalo and this one in Arizona are just simply frightening.  Where the fuel<>oxygen<>heat triangle are complete - it will not be stopped.

Arizona wildfire rages on (Boston Globe Big Picture)
A vast wildfire, measuring half the size of the state of Rhode Island and described as the second worst fire in Arizona history, continues to surge across eastern Arizona. The fire has jumped past firefighter's containment lines to reach the edges of residential areas, prompting more evacuation orders. Winds carrying burning embers continue to ignite smaller fires, causing new concerns about the prospect of extinguishing the 13-day-old fire. The Wallow Fire has destroyed approximately 337,000 acres and threatens main electrical lines that supply power as far away as west Texas. Thousands have evacuated. Paula Nelson (35 photos total
