Ex-Greenpeace leader bats for oil sands

As oil sands protesters stormed Parliament Hill on Monday, following two weeks of protests in Washington highlighted by endorsements of Hollywood celebrities, Canada’s oil sands industry served up a celebrity of its own — Greenpeace co-founder and former leader Dr. Patrick Moore.
In a news release, the Canadian Association of Petroleum Producers said Dr. Moore is showing support for the oil sands in its newspaper and television advertisements airing across Canada as part of an information campaign. The ads showcase producers’ improvements in environmental performance.
Dr. Moore left Greenpeace 15 years ago after co-founding it in Vancouver to establish a science-based approach to environmentalism. But he became a controversial figure for supporting nuclear energy, large-scale hydroelectric projects, the forestry industry and aquaculture, all of which he argues can be sustainable.
