Joslyn North Gains Approval (CEAA News Release and links)

Canadian Environmental Assessment Registry

DECISION

December 8, 2011 -- In conformity with the approval of the Governor in Council, Fisheries and Oceans Canada has taken the following course of action on December 8, 2011 relating to the panel review of the Joslyn North Mine Project, Townships 94-96, Ranges 11-13 West of 4th Meridian. The authority may exercise any power or perform any duty or function with respect to the project because, after taking into consideration the report of the review panel and taking into account the implementation of appropriate mitigation measures, the authority is of the opinion that the project is not likely to cause significant adverse environmental effects.
Implementation of mitigation measures is required for the project to address:
  • birds and/or their habitat
  • fauna at risk (as defined under the Species at Risk Act)
  • fish and/or their habitat
  • air quality
  • water quality
  • water quantity
A follow-up program to verify the accuracy of the environmental assessment and/or determine the effectiveness of any measures taken to mitigate the adverse environmental effects is required for this project. The estimated start and end dates of the follow-up program are December 19, 2011 and December 31, 2037, respectively.
