CANMORE, Alta. — Dave Weighell never suspected that the first time he saw a cougar, it would be plunging its fangs into his dog's neck.

His routine, late-night dog walk turned into a harrowing close cougar encounter Friday near his Canmore, Alta., condo, where Weighell fought off the big cat to save Sequoia, his 45 lbs. border collie-husky cross.

"It was a very bizarre, scary, weird experience," Weighell said.

Fish and Wildlife officers have been scouring the town in search of the cougar, but they've found no tracks or had any sightings since the attack.

A cougar warning was issued Monday and officers have received numerous calls, but nothing conclusive.
