The backlash of Minister Prentice's announcement

I guess we can have anticipated this. An Environment Minister (somehow responsible for pipleines?) announces the government's support for the ailing Mackenzie Gas Project. It has been long argued that the project does not make sense from so many different perspectives. Not the least of which is now with gas trading a below $5 on the futures market. One might argue that this might be the best time to have things move forward. Lower material and labour costs, etc. The most complicating factor is the Alaskan efforts to also construct a monstrous pipeline to the lower 48, which may also have the ability to take Canadian gas (Yukon, BC, AB, and possibly NT if a Dempster Lateral is thrown into the mix). The reserves in Alaska are ginormous on their own and they dwarf the Canadian reserves. But establishing the infrastructure could be a "basin opening" event and could drive further exploration and add reserves. I have been an environmental professional coming on 30 years. Exploration and production activities are not damaging to the environment when developed responsibly. Not necessarily an easy task but a manageable one.
