ENVIRONMENT - The federal government has given the Horizon oilsands tailings pond operated by Canadian Natural Resources Ltd. a passing grade after a CBC News report said it appeared to be leaking toxic sludge.
"As a followup to the allegations around a leak at the CNRL Fort McMurray site, in Alberta, an Environment Canada environmental enforcement officer travelled to the CNRL tailings pond on Tuesday to conduct an on-site joint inspection with Alberta Environment and Sustainable Resource Development," said an e-mail from spokesman Mark Johnson.
"Based on initial findings, no evidence of a Fisheries Act violation was observed. This follows a previous inspection by Environment Canada wildlife officers who found no evidence of violation of the Migratory Bird Convention Act, 1994.
"As a result, Environment Canada will take no further action at this point."
The Alberta Energy Resources Conservation Board inspected the site Monday in reaction to the story and said the site was being operated in accordance with its licence.
It issued a statement that called on the CBC to correct its story.
The story sparked questions in the Alberta legislature and on Parliament Hill.
